Police are investigating the tragedy of a baby killed by a train while on her mother's back.
Witnesses said they saw the woman standing with her baby between two railway lines as two Metrorail trains came at her on Friday morning.
She just stood there, not moving. Then one train struck and killed the nine-month-old baby but the mother survived.
Security guards at Cape Town's Philippi railway station said the woman ran away, but they chased after her and caught her.
One bystander said: "It seemed the woman wanted to commit suicide, but got scared at the last minute. I still don't understand how the kid was struck while on her back.
"Two trains were coming. One train driver hooted, but still the woman stood there, not moving at all.
"The train hit the innocent baby, which flew through the air for a few metres before hitting the ground, dead."
Train commuter, Mzonke Mayila (30), said: "It was terrible. This was just an innocent baby who didn't know what was going on."
Police said there will be an inquest.
